This program is for teachers, teachers' aids, psychologists, school counselors, and school personnel working with young children who are age 3 to 8. It is intended to impact school personnel and children.

Summary

The Incredible Years® (IYS) Teacher Training Program is designed to enhance teacher classroom management skills, promote positive teacher-student relationships and teacher-parent partnerships, help participants instill social and emotional regulation skills to participating children, and implement proactive discipline techniques.

Evidence

Multiple randomized control trials (RCT) were conducted and demonstrated that when the teacher training program was incorporated into already existing IYS Parent Training and Child Training Programs there was an increase in teacher use of proactive classroom management strategies, decreased teacher use of criticism and harsh discipline, and increased teacher bonding with parents.  One RCT assessed the IYS Teacher Training Program as a stand-alone program to determine intervention effects.  Overall, significant positive effects were demonstrated by the decreases in classroom off-task behavior, negative teacher behavior, and students' negative reactions to teachers.

Components

This program is intended to create a positive learning environment and includes the following components:

  • The Teacher Classroom Management Program is designed to strengthen classroom management strategies among teachers, promote pro-social behavior and school preparedness among children, and reduce classroom non-cooperation.   This component supports teacher-parent collaboration.
  • Dina Dinosaur Child Training Series (3 to 8 years old) includes over 120 lesson plans that focus on improving peer relationships and reducing aggression at home and at school.  Teachers implement circle-time discussions followed by small-group practice sessions.   In addition, this element includes a detective-club, activity manual that offers take-home activities parents can use to teach their children school rules, social skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • Emotional Regulation In Preschool:  Teaching Children To Cope With Conflict is a DVD featuring examples of applicable behavior management strategies used by teachers to reduce aggressive and oppositional behavior and strengthen social competence among children.  The DVD shows classroom teachers implementing helpful classroom management skills taught in the IYS Dinosaur Curriculum.
Previous Use

Since 2001, the IYS Teacher Training Program has been implemented among multiple ethnic groups and social classes in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.   Positive results have been found with Asian, Hispanic, African American, and Caucasian groups.

Training

This program has no training requirements; however, to become a certified/accredited group leader or conduct research on the IYS Programs, training is required.  For the Teacher Classroom Management component, a 3-day workshop is offered for group leaders on program delivery to teachers.  Following the workshop, 6 full-day, monthly workshops are offered to teachers to review the curriculum.  A 3-day training is offered for the Dina Dinosaur Child Training Series.
