The Heinz Endowments Veteran and Military Family Initiative Portfolio Evaluation

Since 2018, the Clearinghouse has partnered with The Heinz Endowments, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to examine the impact of their investment in veteran programs and services. The project’s main goals are listed below.

  • Implement evaluation strategies to assess the impact of The Heinz Endowments-Veteran and Military Family Initiative in each of the following strategic areas:
    • Create coordinated, easy-to-navigate pipelines that strengthen and align southwestern Pennsylvania’s network of service providers to improve the well-being of veterans, Service members, and their families;
    • Equip post-9/11 veterans and Service members with the skills and networks they can use to obtain full-time employment;
    • Provide post-9/11 veterans and Service members with the skills and networks they can use to become regional leaders and enact solutions to community needs that align with their passions;
    • Prompt widespread, rigorous, and informed critical thinking about veterans, Service members, and their families; and
    • Influence evidence-based policy at the local, state, and national levels by leveraging research and robust data from The Heinz Endowments’ investments.
  • Provide research support for new and existing strategic grantmaking areas.
  • Maintain the multi-level evaluation framework developed to assess The Heinz Endowments Veteran and Military Family Initiative portfolio.
  • Collaborate with The Heinz Endowments veteran portfolio grantees to enhance their evaluation capacity.
